Volunteer Opportunities

+ Virtual Tutoring (online and in person)

Virtual tutors are paired with a student who is in need of online tutoring. LCC’s Volunteer Coordinator matches volunteers with a student based on skills, availability, and preference. General commitment for this opportunity is at least one hour per week.In order to become an active volunteer for online tutoring, you will need to obtain three clearances: PA Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.

+ SOYPgh Afterschool Program (in person)

SOY support volunteers commit to coming on a regular schedule from 4:00 to 6:00pm at least two times a month. Volunteers build relationships with the children in the program and help staff with program support as needed.SOY is held in person during the 2021-2022 school year at South Hills Middle School and Beechwood Elementary School, in Pittsburgh.In order to become an active volunteer for SOY, you will need to obtain three clearances: PA Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.

+ Become a Mentor

Engage with a middle or high school Latino student at least 4 hours a month while you explore Pittsburgh and build a positive relationship. In order to become an active mentor volunteer, you will need to obtain four clearances: PA Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse, National Sex Offender Registry, and FBI Fingerprint clearance; and submit 2 references.

+ Special Events

Event volunteers assist LCC staff with our special event activities. These include our Navidad in Pittsburgh holiday gift drive and our annual Back-to-School Bash event. In order to become a volunteer for special events, you will need to obtain two clearances: PA Criminal Background Check, and PA Child Abuse.
