SOMOS
(Strengthening Outcomes, Motivating Our Students) Pittsburgh
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
SOMOS Pittsburgh provides students with academic, social, and emotional support through both our mentoring and tutoring programs. Each of our programs offers personalized support to students as they navigate their academic journey, through a careful matching process and in-depth analysis of each student’s individual needs.
TUTORING
The Tutoring program provides academic support (virtually and in person) to students of all ages K-12, with the goal of boosting achievement in areas of need. The program coordinator matches pairs based on a variety of factors that lead to matches we believe are a good fit for both the families and tutors.
Tutors work with students on homework support, and/or on a specific academic growth area once or twice per week depending on the family’s schedule.
MENTORING
The “SOMOS Pittsburgh Youth” Mentoring program provides valuable mentorship opportunities to the next generation of Latinos. The program coordinator pairs students in middle and high school with a Latino professional and university mentors in the local community.
Mentoring pairs meet for a minimum of four hours per month to explore Pittsburgh, build positive relationships, and plan for the student’s successful future. This provides a positive support system for these students by connecting them with a Latino role model whom they can look up to.
During each session that the mentors and mentees have, one of the main goals is to do activities that help the mentees think about and plan their professional futures. Some of those activities include:
Job shadow day
College tour
Resumé writing
Setting a goal, and discussing how to achieve it
Cultural, educational, and local field trips
Elegibility:
Mentoring is available to any enrolled student in grades 6-12 who wishes to expand their future and learn about the world around them.
