ParentChild+

ParentChild+ improves school and life outcomes through a home visiting model that focuses on early literacy, school readiness, and effective parent-child interaction.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

ParentChild+ is LCC’s early childhood home visiting program. PC+ is an international, evidence-based model that is designed for children aged 2-4 and has been proven effective in immigrant communities. The program aims to break the cycle of poverty for families in underserved communities by helping parents engage with their toddlers early in life via early literacy and school readiness programming. Families participating in PC+ take part in 2 30-minute home visits each week that focus on interacting with an educational book or toy, which the family gets to keep in the home. This helps the child start to build their own home library for continued learning.

LCC is in the 3rd year of implementing ParentChild+. The first cohort of young learners ‘graduated’ successfully in June of 2022, and are now in kindergarten! There are currently 20 families enrolled, representing 6 Latin American countries and 17 neighborhoods in Allegheny County.

PROVEN OUTCOMES

Research has shown that children who graduate from ParentChild+ demonstrate improved outcomes in school going forward. Some examples include:

  • ParentChild+ graduates are 50% more likely to be prepared for kindergarten than their peers.

  • Students who graduate from PC+ enter school performing 10 months above their chronological age.

  • PC+ graduates score 2.5 times higher on social-emotional skills than their peers.

  • Students who graduate from ParentChild+ demonstrate 30% higher graduation rates than their socio-economic peers.
