A SPECIAL STORY ON GIVING TO THE LCC:
"It all started with a phone call to Home Depot for a can of paint!"
When Wilma Fonseca, Executive Director of the Latino Community Center, called the Holt Avenue Home Depot for a can of paint to brighten up the once drab community rooms, she didn't know just how important that phone call would be for the Center. Kelly Thomas, Associate Support Supervisor took the call and knew it was a project for Andrew Ormond of Team Home Depot, an organization within Home Depot nationwide who responds to the needs of helping the community. According to Wilma, in 2009, Team Home Depot came in and helped turn the unusable kitchen into a working kitchen complete with new cabinetry, countertops and a sink; they took each of the four open community rooms and converted them into a comfortable, welcoming teen room, classroom, children's room and a conference room. All the damage of holes and broken outlets that once covered LCC's rooms were now drywalled, painted, and updated with new outlets. Then came the moment The Home Depot Foundation stepped in at the end of 2009. The Home Depot Foundation selected only 5 organizations out of the 3,000 Team Depot groups in the U.S., Guam and Puerto Rico that made the biggest impact on their communities. The Latino Community Center was one of the five honored with being awarded the 2010 Building Community Award inspired by our passion, hard work and commitment. A check for $4,000 was presented by Andrew Ormond and Kelly Thomas to Wilma and Jorge Perez, Associate Director of the Latino Community Center this month!
