Demographics

Population and Geographical Area Served

The Latino Community Center serves one of our area’s most diverse and impoverished communities the near southside of Milwaukee , including the 53204 and 53215 zip codes. It is a young, ethnically and racially diverse neighborhood, in which young people 17 and under make up almost a third of the population. Our analysis of the neighborhoods we serve enables us to design and implement programming that effectively reaches our target populations. Twenty-two percent of the area’s families live below the poverty level, and 73% of adults 18 and older do not have a high school diploma. There are over 29,000 young people under the age of 18 in this community, which is 6% Black, 2% American Indian, 4% Asian, and 56% White. Additionally, 50% of area residents identify themselves ethnically as Hispanic. [1] Due to the extremely high population density of the area, the level of poverty, the high drop-out rate, and the extremely high number of youth, it is vital that there be high quality after-school programs available.
